Can I request conditions of divorce like not to date my sister?

Dear Liz,
OK, you know how sometimes celebrities will do stupid things like get married to a jerk in Vegas? Well, I kind of did that and I want to divorce this cheating dirtbag. Can I request conditions of divorce, like “don’t date my sister” or “move to another state”? I want my “husband” as far away from me as possible, but I can see him dating in my social circle and doing other things to be an (expletive) to me.
– Don’t Date My Sister

Dear Don’t Date My Sister,

Oh, wow, your situation sounds like a Greek tragedy waiting to happen. I have so many questions…but no answers to the question you asked me and so I’m going to let my pal Amy chime in. She is an expert on divorce and so I’m going to let her tackle this one.

Here is what Amy had to say:

Your sister can rest easy. You and your spouse can reach any agreement you choose regarding the conditions of your divorce within the bounds of the law. It may cost you though, as your spouse may want to retain more assets in exchange for agreeing not to date your sister. Without an agreement, however, it is unlikely a court would order your spouse not to date within your social circle unless there was some danger involved, i.e. a protective order situation. If it is important to you, you will need to negotiate the terms and be prepared to give something up.

Good luck!

~ Liz
